Confessions of a basic bimbo

Over the past few years, I've become interested in the negative connotation that society and Gen Z, in particular, have placed around being "basic" and how social media may affect it.

I could be perceived as basic in many ways. I work at Lululemon, love a good pumpkin spice cold foam cold brew, and am easily influenced to buy things from Tik Tok.

The song "Electric Love" by BORNS went viral in 2020. Around that time, for some reason, I couldn't help but boast that I discovered the song in 2014 on the iTunes 69 cent list.

Why did I feel like my music taste would be frowned upon if it wasn't solely under-the-radar finds? I'm all for creativity and discovering new things, but we should not be ashamed to like things that other people like. So turn up your Taylor Swift song, post your Spotify Wrapped and live your truth.

Nobody likes waiting in lines. Time is money, and we all have better things to do. I think that lines are pretty awesome. When my friends tell me they don't want to go somewhere because of the line, I say it's a sign of a fun event that's worth the wait. When I was 10, I waited in a three-hour line for the Hogwarts ride at Harry Potter World. At one point, the entire line did the wave. At that moment, I became obsessed with unity and finding the fun in life's journeys.

It's time to embrace your inner "basic bimbo"… or bimboy? In 2023, let's release our egos and the fear of being basic as we find joy in shared experiences. After all, there's often a reason why things are so popular and lines are so long.

Til next time - my Starbucks is ready.
